Guys, I'm having trouble reading Pocket PC Word documents in my laptop. When files are opened, screen shows properties dialogue box only. Is there a way for me to read Word documents made in my Pocket PC using my laptop (during sync)? My unit is an XDA II. Thanks!!!
ActiveSync will convert Pocket Word documents to Word format if you transfer files through the AS connection unless you have changed the default conversion setting. Word cannot read Pocket Word files in their native format. How are you moving the files from your device to your PC?
If you do not wish to use ActiveSync to convert the files, you can save them in Pocket Word using an alternate format (txt, rtf, or doc) that Word supports.
To have files automatically convert on connection, save them in the default 'My Documents' folder and select to sync files under the ActiveSync options. They will be stored on your PC in the partnership's associated folder. The AS conduit itself does not typically support direct access of files on your device like removable media, but it does let you do the operations to move files back and forth so you can create a local copy that can be used. Movement through the AS conduit includes converting formats as specified in conversion options.
There are apps that let you access your device like a card reader if you do not want to make an ActiveSync connection. Card Export II lets you toggle your device between AS and card reader modes, reader mode letting the host PC access memory cards in the device as removable media. WM5torage provides similar function, but only for WM5 devices. The card reader function does not make any file conversions as files go between the device and the host PC.
